These are twelve fun ways to teach sight words shared below that we’ve done that have worked, with a few more sight word activities from around the web as well.
When my oldest became a first grader and came home with a letter about their expectations for learning sight words… call me crazy, but I was so excited!
That means we get to do all these fun sight word activities to help him learn them!
Many kindergarten kids are ready to learn sight words. Fun sight word games and activities make it fun and not feel like you’re in a classroom doing homework.
Sight words are all about memorization and recognition. Not about the spelling or phonics. It’s much like letter recognition, so many of those activities can be applied to sight words!
Just as well, a wonderful bonus is that any of these activities can also be adapted to letters, it goes back and forth. Check out the game on the stairs, or the magic paint.
So, if you have a preschooler, or even a toddler, that wants to play along, just switch out the sight words for letters of the alphabet.
I’ve done this so many times with my kids. While my oldest works on sight words and my preschooler or toddler works on letters. Its a wonderful combo for hands-on learning.
Often, your child’s teacher will send home a sight word list for them to work on for the week or so. They often use the Dolch sight word list, but may also include other high frequency words kids will see regularly (like the days of the week, months, etc).
You can use these activities over and over again with new words each time to help with your child’s reading skills.
12 fun sight word activities using a lot of hands on learning:
- Make a sight word treasure hunt.
- Find matching pairs of sight words. Like the worksheets that you draw a line to the matching pair… but big.
- Jump and grab the sight words.
- Make an I spy sensory bag to spot the sight words.
- A spider web caught the sight words! Oh-no! Find the matching sight words on the web.
- Sight word practice, a game to get to the top of the stairs.
- Magic sight word learning. What sight word magically appears? Can you name it?
- Can you spot the sight word in the magazine? Circle it!
- Sight word cup crash from Coffee Cups and Crayons
- Sight word speed racer game from No Time for Flash Cards
- Sight word parking lot from SupplyMe
- Sight word scavenger hunt from No Time for Flashcards
