Big Bird will certainly be teaching letters. The Count will make learning math funny. And Cookie Monster will definitely empty a plate of cookies!
All of that is true of course, but Sesame Street has so much more to offer.
Kids will still learn their letters and numbers, but they will also be offered life lessons in a way that is easy for them to understand.
Sesame Street was a favorite of mine when I was little and now my kids love it.
There is something special about snuggling up to watch familiar characters sing and share stories.
After 40 years of making learning fun, Sesame Street has joined another household name. Starting January 2016, you will find new Sesame Street episodes on HBO. I’m excited to join in the effort to spread the word.
Friendship
What is a friend? How do you make friends? What do you do when you hurt a friend’s feelings?
These short videos manage to answer all of these questions in a very fun way.
- What are Friends
- Quiero Ser Tu Amigo (“I want to be your friend.”)
- Cave Compassion
Find tips to help your kids make and foster a friendship here.
Emotions
Emotions are a huge topic for kids. They are feeling all these big feelings but don’t have the experience to know what to do with them.
Watching stories unfold in a healthy way helps kids connect with the way they feel. Not only does it put a name to the emotions, making it easier to explain how they feel, it also lets them know they are not the only ones to feel that way.
- Anger Management
- Sad Balloon & Happy Balloon
- Frustrated Ray
Healthy Eating Habits
We all want our kids to get excited about healthy food. Sesame Street makes food just as fun as everything else.
I especially love the last video in this section. The daughter convinces her parents to try new foods!
- Hurray-Hurray for Broccoli
- Bert’s Fruit Rap
- Guess What’s for Dinner
Find out the secrets for getting your kids to eat healthy.
Family
Family is one of the first things kids know and understand.
Learning more about other families and different parts of their own family helps to expand on the world around them.
- 5 People In My Family
- Abuela Drawing
- Baby Cousin
Check out our family traditions for the holidays.
Recycling
How to take care of the world we live in is one of the most important lessons we can learn.
From recycling and reusing to purchasing used items instead of buying new, these videos break down this important topic in a way that had us watching over and over.
- Mayonnaise Jar
- Box City Recycle Rap
- Grouch Thrift Shop
Make sure to mark the calendar – January 16th!
This updated version of Sesame Street on HBO is something we don’t want to miss. Follow Sesame Street and HBO on Facebook to stay connected while you wait.

My kids have learned so much from Sesame Street… most of all letters and numbers. It’s great because they have a number and letter of the day and they see it throughout the episode. So it’s repetition…but in a fun way.. Sesame Street style. They love the songs. My youngest has special needs.. and has difficulty remembering letters and numbers but he loves music and remembers songs with ease. This style of learning works very well for him, and he recognizes letters and numbers he remembers being sung about on the show. A big one is “C is for Cookie”. I love Sesame Street. I grew up with it, and my kids love it. The characters are adorable. It’s fun. And they even make it fun for the adults by featuring fun famous actors, singers and sports figures, and doing parodies of current shows and movies. I actually really enjoy watching it with my kids… a lot more than any other kids show out there.

When my daughter was little she loved Elmo & Ernie. She had 2 gold fish named Ernie & Bert. She learned how to count to 10 by the age of 3. She learned her colors and how to care for a pet,her gold fish. I like how everyone, human or puppet would treat each other nice. It taught her that it doesnt matter the color of someones skin, we’re all the same. She loved Ernie in the tub! I watched it with my sisters as a kid. Now I have my granddaughter who will also watch Sesame Street. Its a great educational program. Thank you for the chance :)

We live in a low-population state without much diversity, which is even lower in our rural area. One of the best lessons Sesame Street teaches (without preaching) is that there are all sorts of people, and that’s okay. People do come in different colors, genders, shapes, and sizes, and have different accents, abilities, and talents, and all of that is okay.

We have been watching Sesame Street in my household for 9 years…however its my eldest daughter Natalie who benefited the most…she was non verbal with anger issues and ADHD. Sesame Street gave her an idea on how to treat other people, sharing and caring. She learned to mimic empathy first and through action of mimic, learned to really be empathetic. She learned her abc’s, 123’s, shapes and colors. She also learned self confidence from Elmo via singing songs and lastly how to accept others being different yet the same. None of my children pay any attention to who is black, brown or white…its awesome!! Now our toddler who is 2 1/2 is singing along to Elmo and Chris and learning abc’s and 123’s!!
