Yarn crafts always make for fun crafts for the kids. Make this easy yarn apple craft for some simple kid-made Fall decor!
Its apple season here, the apples are just about ready, so I thought it was the perfect idea to make a yarn apple craft.
We’ve done this yarn technique many times in the past. So I won’t get into huge detail of how to do it, you can read more about any tips I have in these other yarn crafts:
Beautiful Yarn Apple Craft for Kids to Make
This yarn apple craft really is a pretty simple craft.
Have more Fall fun with apple activities using real apples!
I put a bunch of glue in a bowl. Then, George added some water to it and stirred it together.
We decided to add red glitter to the glue mixture for some sparkly, shiny apples!
Then I held out some red yarn for George to cut. I love the sharp-pointed Fiskars scissors (affiliate link) that we use.
George took the yarn and dipped it in the glue mixture. Stirring it around with a spoon.
In our other crafts, Henry always took this as an opportunity to get his hands messy and would use his hands.
But George is much more cautious and wanted to keep out of the glue as much as possible.
For the most part, George scooped the yarn out with a spoon and plopped it in the muffin tin. Then, he used his fingers to spread it out to cover the bottom of each muffin spot.
This makes the base apple part of your yarn apple craft.
I did get him to string it out with his fingers a couple of times. I love the sensory aspect of this craft!
Once all the bases of the apples were made, George cut some small pieces of green paper to be a leaf.
He stuck it on the edge of the red yarn.
Before popping them in the oven, George gave another shake of glitter to all the apples! They’re extra sparkly!
Then its time to wait and wait. These always take forever to dry.
I stuck them in the oven at its lowest setting (170 degrees F) for a good hour. And then let them sit out.
I popped them back in the oven because I am so impatient.
I think they ended up in the oven for about 4 hours total.
Once they were dry on the top, I popped them out of the muffin tin and flipped them over on a sheet pan to put back in the oven for a little bit longer.
If you don’t want to struggle popping them out, line your muffin tin with wax paper.
With some string (affiliate link), I attached them to the curtain rod in our big window in the dining room.
Some festive apples to begin the fall season!
The apple tree craft we made would be great with this craft!

Approximately what is the glue to water ratio? Like a splash of water or closer to 50/50?
Tabitha Lightfoot says
Hi Nickie! It’s more like a splash of water, you don’t want it too watered down. Have fun with it!

I did this project in my classroom and the children loved it! First they took a piece of yarn, “squished it up and put it in a cup”. They squeezed glue on top of the yarn and “stirred” it with their finger. I had spread parchment paper on a cookie sheet and drew circles for the children to put the yarn in. They sprinkled glitter on top and the little apples are so cute! I took the trays home and put them in the oven at 170° for an hour or so.

Do these have to go in the oven? We do not have access to an oven at my school.
Rachel says
They will probably work with just air drying, but may take a very long time to dry completely. Let us know if it works!
Cherie says
Hi….I was just wondering do you need to put the apples in the oven….I work with preschoolers and we do not have an oven…just wondering do you think that they can dry by themselves??
Jamie Reimer says
They would eventually dry without the oven – try sticking them outside on a super sunny day maybe. It will just take a lot longer. Maybe over the weekend or something.
Angela says
Hello, I love this idea! How long did you have them in the oven during the first and second time. I don’t want to burn the apples.

So cute! I see my girls creating a bunch to make a little garland of apples to hang across our fireplace! Thanks for including a link to my own apple craft project in your post. :)
Jamie Reimer says
Thanks Olivia and you’re welcome. Your apples are adorable!

This is a cute craft. I tried it with wax paper and it didn’t turn out well. The wax paper stuck to the yarn and I couldn’t peel it off. I redid the craft, minus the wax paper, and it turned out well

This is simply adorable! We are starting an apple unit next week and craft time is my son’s favorite….so this will be on our list!
