Build bonds with your kids and discover early engineering skills making fun play dough straw buildings together, with an activity from Member of the Month Ashley!
Ashley wanted to build solid relationships with her two young sons (plus one on the way!), but was struggling with finding and prepping activities.
“Before I joined The Activity Room®, we barely did activities at all,” Ashley says. “If anything, we didn’t do much of anything fun. It was just me trying to figure out what to do based on books I was given or Pinterest.”
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to do hands-on activities with her kids. Getting all the random, single-use supplies and prepping complicated Pinterest-perfect activities took a lot of time – something Ashley doesn’t have.
“It was hard to get everything done,” she explains. “You had to get them done the night before, and I was not good at that at all. Or you needed to go to the store and buy a whole bunch of materials.”
“There were a lot of Pinterest fails before we joined The Activity Room!“
Building Brotherly Bonds with Hands-On Activities!
Ashley is a dedicated Mom and wears a lot of hats around the house. Even with all her care and time, she still felt like she wasn’t as close to her kids as she’d prefer.
“I really wanted to solve the problem of not getting to spend enough quality time with my kids,” she explains. “They were fed and taken care of, but that quality time just wasn’t there.”
Adding hands-on activities from The Activity Room has totally changed Ashley’s bond and relationship with her boys.
“Since we started doing activities, I get to know them better,” Ashley shares. “We bond a lot more. They bond together as brothers. We all get to know each other a lot better!”
Taking the planning and prep off her plate has been a complete gamechanger!
“The Activity Room has helped me to take care of all the legwork up until you do the activity,” Ashley says. “I like that you can go online and see the entire month of plans.”
Ashley loves being the “cool” mom – and having lots of quality time with her family.
“As a Mom, I feel more involved, more fun,” Ashley explains. “Without The Activity Room, I think I would just be struggling to feel confident with what to do with my kids.”

The activities are fun and simple, and the parents who participate in the Facebook group help to encourage me and modify activities to suit the needs of my kids. I can search for an activity at any time on the website, and I usually have all the materials to do them which makes this affordable and accessible for my family.

Early Engineering Play Dough Straw Buildings
We love building: with blocks, LEGOs, and play dough. Adding straws into our fun was a natural fit!
To make your own play dough straw buildings, you’ll need:
- Play dough – any kind
- Drinking straws
- Space to create
We made several shapes using cut straws attached to the dough such as hearts, squares, triangles, etc.
My kids totally love this activity! I like that it engages their creativity and their problem-solving skills, too.
We started with shapes, but you could also make complete buildings, too! Use straws to support play dough walls and roofs.
You could even make a whole city out of play dough buildings!
