https://handsonaswegrow.com/what-i-wish-moms-would-say/I know I’m going to get a lot of flak for having that title.
But I like the combination of technology and kids.
I refuse to feel guilty for letting my kids watch TV, or TV programs on other screens, such as our sponsor Kidoodle.TV.
I’m not sure how many times I’ve heard or read in the last 6 years of being a parent that my kids should not watch TV, and how terrible it is for my kids. All the damage it will do to them. And that they should especially not watch TV before 2 years old. Let’s be realistic. Parenting is hard. Very hard.
I’m not here to say all that research is wrong, because I have done absolutely zero research on the topic. I’m just here to say, it’s okay. Stop the self doubting. The guilt.
If you’re here reading hands on : as we grow, you’re probably already spending loads of time with your kids. You’re doing activities with them, being hands on with them.
So don’t feel like the worst parent in the world when you plop your kids in front of the TV so you can finish a deadline, or just stay sane at that moment.
I’m not saying to plant them there for the day and you go get a pedicure.
But I do believe that TV is okay every once in a while and isn’t all that bad.
Why it’s okay for your kid to watch TV every once in a while and how to make the most of it when they do.
- Educational programming really is really educational, believe it or not. Be selective in the programming they watch! A Mom with a Lesson Plan has 5 educational programs that make her feel okay with TV.
- This is a tech world. It’s their future in some capacity or another. Being familiar with how iPads, computers and other tech works will be to their advantage. Incorporate activities with technology.
- Introduce topics and other things that they wouldn’t normally get to experience. And then talk about it or explore it more with activities.
- Yes, activities! Just like you see so many book and activity pairings, educational TV episodes like those you find on Kidoodle.TV can easily be paired with an activity to let them really grasp a concept that might be harder to do without seeing it first.
- They won’t be ruined for life. And it can help you stay sane. Be prepared with what you need to get done and really use the time effectively so that when TV time is up, you’re ready for focused kid time.
Need more reasons? I loved these 8 reasons to let your kids watch TV from The Stir. And I love this read at The Huffington Post about why TV really isn’t so terrible.
Kidoodle.TV is a new service to me; it’s an ad-free streaming service (only $4.99 a month), and I’ve found it pretty impressive. It’s much like other TV service subscribers, but made entirely for kids, with the kid in mind.
It has only safe, kid-friendly content. Even better is that it has age appropriate content.
If they’re 3 years old, you set their profile to 3 years old and they won’t be able to choose episodes that are more fitting for 8 year olds. Because there’s a big difference in programming between those ages!
What I’m loving most so far is that it has built in time limits. So when you say 20 minutes is all the TV time you get today, you can mean it and stick to it with absolutely no budging. That’s easy. When they complain, you can blame it on the TV, it knows what to do and you said 20 minutes.
Kidoodle.TV is accessible! Kids can watch from most Internet-connected devices, including iPad, Mac, PC, laptops, tablets, and smartphones (Android and iOS), and will be expanding to gaming consoles, smart TVs and other devices. A password-protected account allows the user access to content from multiple locations.
And I just want to add to my reasons. My kids are smart. Really smart kids. No, television didn’t make them that way. The episodes they watched didn’t make them that way. They’re just smart kids. And we do tons of learning activities to help out. All I’m saying is that the TV hasn’t made them stupid.

“I’m not here to say all that research is wrong, because I have done absolutely zero research on the topic. I’m just here to say, it’s okay.” – Maybe you should do a bit of research before speaking on a topic. But then again you probably choose not to in order to be able NOT to feel guilty and tell other people it is ok. And moreover in order to recommend a service which brings you personal gains. I see a lot of people jumping on the “who cares about reseach wagon” as well. But I think deep down you do feel some guilt.
Megan says
I’m going to comment something that is often thought of as horrible, but i don’t care. The tv is always on in my house. We don’t watch shows with swearing, sex, drugs, or anything i don’t want my kids to see. We are very careful of what we let them watch.
My now 7 1/2 year old learned his letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and how to read words by the tv (usually word world, sesame street, read between the lions, and a few other pbs shows) bringing up the topics and i was right there with him to join in with singing the songs, help him count on his fingers and toes, read the books we had, and explain things further. He was counting to 20 by the age of 3, to 50 by the age of 4, reading level 1 readers almost entirely among by the age of 4, and counted to 100 a few times for his k4 preschool teacher. She was impressed with how his mind soaked it all up and he understood it. All because i made the shows he watched interactive and an active learning time. If you aren’t there next to them, it’s still learning time, it’s just passive and might need more repeats.
Nothing wrong with tv. But you need to be mindful of what they are watching as make it active at least once a day.
And for those thinking my kids only like tv, my 7 1/2 year old is CONSTANTLY reading, always carrying around a book, looking for any chance to read even just one more sentence. His 4 year old brother is trying to write and read and starts k4 in the fall. Their sister is 2 and counts to 5 and is trying to read. All three love math flash cards.
Jamie Reimer says
I agree Megan! Well-done. You have some bright kids! Good job.
babykitted says
I think it’s okay to let kids watch tv for few hours a day, but they have to watch educative programs and things for their age. It’s always about balance.

After reading this post I will be unsubscribing to your blog.
Jamie Reimer says
I’m sorry to hear that we disagree on this, but that’s okay. I totally respect others reasons for not allowing screen time.
Sawyer says
I think it’s ridiculous how some people unsubscribed, just because logic was introduced. How immature of them. But they do not matter. I am here to state my experience. My son is my miracle baby and I wanted to do everything by the book, but unfortunately, I have many health problems. My son refuses to speak, but he’s a genius, yet no matter what my I have tried to do, he just wouldn’t speak. (note: father was on deployment, understands 3 languages and even has a speech therapist.) The lad is 2yrs old now, but this particular tale happened last month. As I stated before, I have many health issues, one of them being scoliosis. Well last month, I slipped a disk and couldn’t move or play much, which made me feel like a horrible parent. Finally giving in, I allowed my son to watch a channel called babyfirst and on there was a show about “larry” (short for vocabulary) a parrot that “learn new words and gets them right”. After a week and a half of recovering and my boy watching that channel, I thought to myself “I better turn this off before he gets too fond of it”. While I was looking for the remote, that Larry show came on and like he always does, repeats the same words repetitively. This day, it was “ball” and I playfully tapped my son and asked “Huh? What did Larry say?” Not expecting an answer, I just smiled, ruffled his hair, when suddenly “ball.” …shocked I just stared dumbly “what did you say?” my son points to his ball, smiled widely, and repeated “ball!” All these months working with him and a speech therapist and he learns from… The thing I was told to deprive him of. The therapist admittedly stated that these studies are built around “meaningless” shows for kids and that educational shows have yet to have been studied!! My son, who never spoken for 23months, now says things like “no, Dino, Mickey, hello, yes, Uh-oh, pwease” and a few others, all because of PBS, babyfirst, nickjr, and Disney Jr…….. This whole time, I’ve could’ve been educating him and avoiding many hospital trips, if only I gave television a chance. This proves, “Every child is different”

The tv is in the family room so I’m always able to keep an eye or hear what she’s watching. With her having the freedom to watch television she rarely watches it. I completely agree with you about letting kids watch tv. My daughter is 28 so there wasn’t as much techy stuff back then. I was a single mom so I couldn’t afford anything if there was stuff back then. I didn’t even get a computer until she was in highschool. LOL! Bird bird and elmo were great babysitters while I cleaned the house. I let her watch tv since she could see it. Nowadays I know we really have to be careful on what our kids see on tv and the computer. My nieces come over and they play dress up games on my computer. I watch them while they play and I also have pop up blocked so no adult stuff ever pops up. One day I went to a blog I’ve been following for over a year and an adult movie advertisement popped up.Boy was I shocked! So I made sure that never happens again with a porn block. Anyways I think tv should be limited to a few hours a day. Shows like Sid the Science Kid are great b/c they’re teaching kids fun things. Now that I’ve put you all to sleep I’d like to say thank you for the awesome giveaway. I learned a lot tonight on your blog :)

My older sons are grown and doing quite well. As youngsters they each had a computer (Macintosh) with various learning games. TV was allowed but with certain rules: No cartoons, no pointless non-educational shows, time limit of up to 2 hours total daily. I grew up with the same TV limits. My youngest uses my iPad now and then, knows how to use different platforms, watches some TV but not much and not every day as he’s way too active and interested in more things outside the house.

My oldest has been using it since she was 2, and she’s VERY advance for her age. I think appropriate technology use is so important. I’m not letting it “raise” them, but it is 2014, this is the age of technology. I think having children growing up using it is key to their success in the future. There is no denying that as an adult, a large percent of our lives revolve around the ability to use technology effectively. This gives our kiddos a leg-up, because it most certainly will be even more involved in the future.

My nephews have a TV in their room plus video games they play on the family TV. They have cell phones but only for basic communication, no internet access. They watch a lot of kid-specific videos and their fair share of broadcast TV, but they also maintain great grades and are active in sports. I don’t think TV is bad for kids if it’s age-appropriate or educational. I spent hours upon hours watching it and managed to graduate in the top 15% of my college class. I do think it’s important for parents to regularly suggest other entertainment options such as books, worthwhile computer activities and playing outdoors.

When my daughter was growing up, we had one family television and VCR. Now, of course, technology has created an entirely different landscape. I don’t even have a television anymore! Just a wide-screen laptop. My grandchildren have access to the family TV for television, DVDs, Wii, Xbox, etc. plus they each have their own laptop and mini iPad and iPhones. My granddaughter loves watching TV shows on her laptop and reading on her iPad, while my grandson is almost exclusively into games unless the family is watching a DVD together.

Our daughter (2.5) watches some TV (PBS kids programs) and has some toddler actions music videos that she’ll watch sometimes too. We try to vary what she watches. She also has an old iphone 3 she uses a few apps on. When she uses that I’ll set a timer for 15 minutes and when it goes off she knows she has to hand it over. I try to do that only when I need to get a meal ready or right before we leave the house or something of the like when I just need a few minutes of time to get something done. It can be really easy to just let her sit there and use it while she “zones out” so using the timer is good for both of us. Can’t say I never ignore the timer for a few minutes but she’s much better about handing it over since we started doing that.

We do no screen time during the week as it distracts everyone in the house, but they are allowed to watch TV on weekends. Here’s my post on the subject http://wp.me/p44uQC-3B

The only ‘device’ we use is a plain old tv, but I do let my daughter watch Sesame Street. :)

My son has his own Kindle. It was actually mine, but he kind of took it over from me! I found it easier to set it all up for him (he’s only 2) and then use a “spare” Kindle that my husband had for all my own apps and books. My son’s used that Kindle since he was 10 months old. I’m all for technology – but like everything it has to be in moderation!

My daughter is 2 and I do let her watch some tv. She watches mostly Baby Einstein videos, loves them, and just more recently became interested in cartons like Minnie Mouse or Curious George. She doesn’t have the patience for a Disney movie yet. She also plays on our tablet – she is pretty much the only user. She knows how to start it and switch between her favorite apps. She also sometimes plays on our smart phones, when nothing else is available. I’m amazed at how comfortable and intuitive she is with technology, it’s really interesting to watch her.

I totally agree that there is nothing wrong with some educational t.v. Like you said, there are things that you need to get done, like take a shower. Just be careful about the shows you let them watch and the amount of time they are in front of the t.v. My kids are grown (and plenty smart too) but now it’s time to get acquainted with the current educational shows for my grandkids. Thanks for the information on Kidoodle.tv I will definitely have to look into that.
