So… January’s about passed.
How are your New Year’s Resolutions going?
Its been a tough month for us. I’m not making excuses, we’re just having a hard time getting back into a routine since winter break.
If you recall, my New Year’s Resolution is to spend one on one time with each of my kids, every day. To make each of them feel special. My goal is 10 minutes a day with each kid. That’s the part I’m struggling with. I am easily spending time with each of my kids, but 10 minutes has been the struggle.
Our sponsor, Hallmark, wants to make sure that Life is a Special Occasion. Not just all the holidays and craziness that we just went through.
These days, now, every day, are special.
So, what are we going to do to make them special? That’s what I’m hoping this New Year’s Resolution is going to do. Not anything in particular that we’re doing to make any day more special than the next. Just every day is a special day, because we’re together.
The way I first went at the time to do something meaningful together… to make sure we read books, or do a planned activity together. And quickly realized that wasn’t going to be easy and would take away from what the kids are truly enjoying in the moment.
I also first went at it that the other two boys couldn’t be around when I wanted to spend one on one time with one of them. So it could be truly, and solely, only about that one. What was I thinking? That’s never going to happen…
Now, my time spent with each one of them is by focusing on one child at a time, even while they’re playing together, just really trying to connect with one.
Or finding small moments throughout the day to connect, like after school time when we’re going through book bags, or making dinner together, or even doing chores by setting the table or helping with laundry.
As long as I’m not shouting orders at them, and really talking to them and focusing on them, I feel like that connection has been made.
I know, it sounds small and silly that such a small gesture like that seems so hard to do sometimes.
In the day to day activities, sometimes the real connections seems to get lost though and I just want to bring that little bit back.
And so far, I believe its helped us as a family. I’ve noticed my husband taking part too, taking time to really sit and play and see what’s going on more often than before.
I’ve been sharing when I can with the #EveryKidEveryDay hashtag on Facebook and Instagram. But haven’t been able to get photos every day either. I’d love for you to join me in this resolution to make Life a Special Occasion and spend meaningful one on one time with each and every kid, every day.
