What a colorful activity for toddlers and preschoolers to have a splattering good time!
This activity is easy and quick to set up, and bound to get some giggles from the kids. Set this up quick for a fun art activity and pair it with the book, Mix it Up by Herve Tullet.
You’ll need your favorite kids paint, cotton rounds, paper (butcher paper works amazing for this) and a toy hammer (or something solid to smash with).
This activity can get pretty messy, so this is a great one to take outside to be easily hosed off, or put down a sheet or shower curtain under the area you’ll be using.
Set out a piece of paper and put dots of all different colors of paint all over it, spaced out more than the size of your cotton rounds.
Have your child cover each paint dot with a cotton round. If you’d like you can keep the paint colors a secret and cover the cotton rounds yourself. Then, make it a game and have your child guess the paint colors under each cotton round before hitting it.
And then its time to have some fun! I recommend a paint apron for this part, or have your child wear an old shirt (or my boys would have preferred to remove their shirts).
Using the toy hammer, smash a cotton round and just watch the paint splatter! I guarantee you’ll get some giggles and the kids will want to do this over and over!
Let them! While they splatter the paint, you can prep the next piece of paper!
Remove the cotton rounds when they’re done and you’ll have your very own Jackson Pollock art piece.
For older kids, make it a memory game. Have them cover the cotton rounds one at a time, trying to remember the paint colors. And then try to hit matching colors.
