Back to school is here! And I’m determined to find some way to display the kids’ artwork that gets brought home from school.
I always have every intention of scrapbooking.
I always have every intention of doing yearly folders of keepsakes for school.
I always have every intention… Oops.
I’m worried about artwork and the upcoming school year. I need to come up with a system that’s easy to maintain and works for me.
As a JCPenney ambassador, I know it’s all about back to school right now. Of course, clothes come to mind at first. Their Arizona brand is a favorite for the boys. I loaded up on summer clothes for the boys during my 20-minute challenge and will be doing the same for back to school.
But after having Henry in Kindergarten last year and George heading into preschool this fall, I knew that coming up with a system for everything that comes home from school is my biggest challenge ahead. I asked around at school what the other moms do.
What do you keep? What do you throw? What do you display?
A veteran mom (her daughter in Henry’s class is the youngest in their family) told me their system. She lets them pick one item to save each day. And at the end of the week, they pick one item from the week. And then again at the end of the month.
I love that! We did that for the most part… except I stopped at the one item per day. Ha! I kept his school stuff in a letter box and when it got full, we purged. Not all of it. Just went through it and decided what to keep and what not.
I did that again at the end of the year.
I still had a huge pile of papers! It is crazy what this kid does in school!
His teacher also told me to not keep any worksheets they bring home. I agree with that for the most part )since I don’t like worksheets to begin with), but I love seeing how his writing improves or stories differ from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. So I decided to keep a few key pieces.
As for the artwork, I kept most of it. It was usually what Henry chose to keep each day. It was the highlight for him in school so he wanted to keep it.
But, they were often on bigger pieces of paper, so I folded them, and they took up so much space!
I finally decided to take photos of them all. And put them on display, so Henry could be proud of it every day and see it hanging on the wall.
I used Photoshop to make my collage, but I’m sure free online resources such as PicMonkey or Picasa can do the trick too.
I did the same thing for George’s crafts and art he made at home.
And Louis, well, I made one for him too, but it was just fun snapshots of him because he doesn’t have that much artwork that we save yet.
I also made sure to title each collage of photos with the kids’ names, the year and grade (for school work) or their age and the date.
I’ve framed these with these gorgeous black frames I got at JCPenney. (FYI – if your local store doesn’t carry frames, you can find them online.)
Then I hung them on a wall, along with a photo of each of the boys above them.
I love this wall in my foyer. It makes me smile! And the boys too.
Disclosure: I am a JCPenney ambassador and am really enjoying sharing the products I find with you!

I absolutely love this and am planning on making these as welcome gift bags for my sister’s wedding. What kind of paint did you use? Are of my paint is water soluble, and I am worried that the paint will eventually run or fade if water gets on it. Did you seal the paint somehow afterwards? Thank you!!!

I am buying labels for all of the little guy’s supplies, and PANTS. Boys and their pants. I could have 20 pairs – they’d all have grass stains and I’d have to go buy more.

I homeschool my preschooler. I have to get her some new workbooks and art supplies. Frames would be great to hang up her masterpieces.
