Do your kids have a “thing”? That thing they can’t get enough of? My kids’ thing is superheroes.
They are flat-out obsessed. And being a mom to three girls, I love to find ways to encourage them to be their own superheroes.
If you have energetic kiddos or superhero addicts, this Superhero Playground Challenge is a TON of fun!
One way that I can support them in being their superhero-obsessed selves while playing outside is with this Superhero Playground Challenge. They can have fun while being active and trying new things.
I came up with four activities that I could easily scale for each one’s physical level while still challenging her.
The final thing I needed to find was a reward for all the hard work they would be doing.
I thought our sponsor, Fruit Shoot, had a perfect reward for kids who are burning lots of energy!
Fruit Shoot juice drink is a fun way to reward them for pushing themselves to try new things. It is made with real fruit juice, no high fructose corn syrup and offers no-sugar-added varieties.
It is a huge bonus that it comes in a bottle with an easy-close sport top instead of a flimsy pouch with a tiny straw that makes a huge mess when you poke it in.
(The bottle is much easier for superheroes to carry around the playground, especially 3-year-old superheroes.)
Our first activity: Superhero Balance Beam
I drew three balance beams with sidewalk chalk on our driveway. They are basically long rectangles.
I also drew circles at the end of each “beam” for a jumping target. And their Fruit Shoot was waiting for them.
Hannah (3) walked on her beam and then jumped to her circle. Emma (5) did high knees and a star jump to her circle.
Izzie (8) had a few different challenges on her beam. She did a spin, then some donkey kicks, and then balanced on one foot. She finished with a star jump too.
We moved to the playground for the rest of our activities.
The second activity: Jump! Jump! Jump!
I laid out a softball bat for Hannah to jump back and forth over.
Izzie and Emma jumped up and down onto the wooden curb surrounding the playground.
The third activity: Strong Superhero Arms
Hannah climbed the ladder up to the monkey bars (it is a really big ladder for her little legs!).
Emma hung from one of the monkey bar handles for as long as she could.
Izzie made it partway across the monkey bars.
And the final activity: Leap of Faith!
I set up a hula hoop on the ground in front of them.
They first threw a softball into the hoop and then launched off the bench and landed in the hoop.
As they finished off their Fruit Shoots, I couldn’t help but think about how nice it was to not have to hold a juice pouch or box for my 3-year-old. She could use the bottle all by herself, even during her superhero playground challenge.
I got my Fruit Shoot at Wal-Mart, but check out their store locator to find it in your area. You can learn more about Fruit Shoot by visiting their Facebook page.

My kids thing is animals! She loves them, and wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. She also wants to rescue and adopt every animal she sees, which is very sweet but we already have 5 pets. Instead, we do some volunteer work at our local animal shelter and she pet-sits for many of our neighbors. That way she gets to spend more animals and I don’t have a literal zoo at home.

My son’s “thing” is to build and design things. He loves LEGOs and other sets that he can use his imagination on and build elevators, cars, trucks, buildings, marble runs, etc. (Doesn’t care much for following established patterns.) I can best support him by listening and looking as he explains his design plans or shows me what he built, or by sitting down next to him and building together.
