Thank you Sherwin-Williams for sponsoring and for making me redo my Whoops! Room, it was the push I needed to get rid of the much too bright colors!
Whoops!
I’ll call this bedroom my Whoops! room.
When we moved into the house, Henry was about 18 months old, and I wanted a fun, bright room for him. And, that’s what I gave him. A very, very bright room! The green was a little electric, I’d say. (The boy illustration is done by my husband’s aunt! I absolutely love that!)
My husband has been after me to redo this room pretty much since day one. But since we live in an old Victorian home that needs a lot of redoing, I wasn’t about to redo a room that I already redid. That seemed like a step backwards to me.
But, all my kids have now moved through this room. Its our ‘nursery,’ I guess. Each boy has started in this room and, when ready for a big bed, has moved into his own new room to make room for the coming baby. (Ha. That sounds like we’re manufacturing babies… we only have three… and this is it.) So Louis gets this room. And, it was time to make it nice for him, and make my husband happy in the process.
I started browsing for colors of rooms I’d like. I found a few that struck a chord with me and I thought would be perfect for a boy to grow up with.
- Bright colors in orange and blue but toned down with some lighter shades of blue. From RoomZaar on HGTV.
- Same colors I currently have but as subtle accents. From Today’s Creative Blog.
- Subdued colors in green and brown and clean with lots of white. From Decor Demon.
- More bright colors, but just one wall with white as well. Calmed down with brown on other walls. From RoomZaar on HGTV.
With a couple of photos chosen, I used Sherwin-Williams’ color selection tool Chip It!™ This is so slick. You just give it a photo, and it pulls up to 10 paint colors out of that photo! Excellent!
After the colors have been chosen by Chip It!, I entered them into the ColorSnap Studio™ for iPad app and took them to my Whoops! room to see what I’d like to do with them. (I even snapped a photo of the room and did a little painting within the app to see firsthand what those colors would look like.) That made it so easy to decide what colors would look best, firsthand!
Stay tuned to see what colors I chose. I’m curious if you would choose what I chose for colors…

Love that you’re not going with the ubiquitous ‘cowboy’ theme or the ‘nautical’ theme, or even Winnie the Pooh. I hate theme nurseries! Love the ideas you have brewing…
Shelly Jury says
I usually pick a theme then my colors to go with it. Some contrast and some blending.
Amy Lindsay says
I just received your email update of the new soothing room and I had to comment, those were the exact colors I chose for my son as a nursery and as this big boy room. It’s been a great combination for him and opens the door to many boyish themes. As Louis gets bigger and you discover his interests this room could be turned into an outdoor (hunting or fishing) room, it could be a safari or jungle room, or it could even be a farm style room. I am familiar with these themes as they were/are the themes of my son’s room. Enjoy the new little one :)

We painted our son’s room a neutral tan color and gave it a kick with accessories which we can swap out as his interests have developed. Our inspiration tends to come from pictures we see or just looking at the paint chips in the store but we love nature which shows in that we always lean toward greens and browns.
Sally @ Homemaking Reality says
The room for our oldest son was already painted a light brown when we bought the house and I left it that way. It works with most colors and I think it will be a color he can grow up with, even though it isn’t all that exciting. These days, I get my color inspiration from blogs mostly :) Thanks for the chance to win!

For a boy to grow up in I’d choose a palette of brown, pale blue, cream, and green. This gives so many possibilities for accents, with bright blue and yellow when younger, to calmer shades as he grows up. This color scheme would work with any ‘boy patterned’ bedcover or rug.
I get color inspiration from browsing creative blogger ideas on pinterest
Maxine Rose says

I painted all my kids walls white. Then I can accent them with any plaques or stickers they like as they get older. I like using borders to cut the room in half to match my bedspreads etc. They are so easy I mark a broom handle with a certain height and mark the walls the whole way around and in no time at all you can change the room design. I have always made it a rule that my children can pick whatever color for their room that they want. We go to Sherwin-Williams and look through all the color cards, and they take home the ones they’re interested in…and can choose whichever one they like best. And I don’t care whatever color they choose; it’s THEIR room. We are going to be having this house painted soon (we moved in this past fall) and my 11yr old son just chose a very bright blue (it’s actually called ‘hyper blue, if that gives you an idea. He calls it ‘tardis blue’ since it’s the color of the Tardis in Doctor Who). I’m not crazy about it, but I told him he could choose whatever he wants, and I won’t go back on my word.

We just moved to a new house where the walls are flat white and the carpet is beige. I’d LOVE to win this so that I can add some color to my older two boys’ shared bedroom!

I love shades of blue and green mixed.

We painted the ceiling a deep midnight blue and just painted a mural over the neutral colored walls– a huge tree, basically. Then decorated the room with woodland themed decorations.

What colors would you choose for a boy can grow up in? I would have them help select but probably a green.
How do you find color inspiration for your home projects? Everywhere. Nature mostly.

I would choose a light blue with a dark blue trim. Then add a beige for a bookshelf. I just go with the colors I feel good with. I do all of our painting.

If you want it to last through the years, I might go with a navy blue and tan scheme. Maybe too mature for a young boy, though? Honestly, I liked your whoops decor! But then I like bright colors!

I’m a huge fan of blue so I would work with that. When we bought our house, fortunately, my son’s room was already blue and has hues of blue everywhere.

I’m dealing with this same issue right now! We just moved into a new builder beige house and my 4 year old and two year old are sharing a room. I haven’t done anything to it yet but need to figure it out soon. I’m thinking some shades of grey? (The non dirty kind…)

I would choose a mixture of bright basic colors. I like to find inspiration of colors for my home projects via home decor magazines and online. I also like to use paint chips to help me decide what colors I think would be good with others.

I would choose a bright yellow because it contrasts with the flat panels for the grown up legos that you can buy. Then I would mount the lego panels on the wall so he can build a City on the wall. On the next side, I would use chalkboard paint to paint a roadway and find a flourescent white (or add glitter to white paint) for the reflective white striping on the roadway. On the 3rd wall (maybe the one with the window, I would put pegs and give him dress up construction clothes – orange tshirts vests, hard hat. Okay, I know that we don’t wear orange anymore but most kid stuff is still orange. The fourth wall I would make a calmer color which would be the blue that you used as striping in his original room – it would contrast with the yellow and then I would stick is bed next to it and make a reading area there too.

I like blues and browns for a boy. My son didn’t want his walls painted any color except for white, and he has dark brown furniture and blue bedding, so it works. I take a lot of color inspiration from natures, I like a lot of greens, blues and browns.

We went with a light blue and a sage green for my son’s nursery. I’m not sure if we’ll stick with that color scheme when we upgrade it to a “big boy” room

I went with browns and blues for my son–then he became a teenager and it was all posters on the walls lol. My inspiration for room color usually starts with something–a beautiful object or a great accent piece or a color in a counter top even something like a throw pillow. I love paint! It is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to completely redo a room.
Jennifer says
With my son, I went with a very neutral blue, and we spent a ton of time adding plaid designs on one wall.

I would probably pick a mix of different blues!
