Move & LearnPreschoolers6 Comments
This move and learn activity is a twist on something we’ve done in the past.
Henry did this in two different ways. Matching sight words as well as matching snowflakes.
This time, it was for George. And we matched shapes.
I cut out a whole bunch of shapes from paper (construction paper, scrapbook paper, they both work).
I decided to cut 3 of each to match the set of shapes (but 2 would be fine, to make a pair).
I didn’t pay any attention to color. If you have younger kids that are really just grasping the concept of shapes, you could cut each set of shapes out of the same color of paper to give another clue.
I hung each of the shapes with yarn and tape in a doorway.
Before hanging them, I had George come over and stand on his tippy toes and reach as high as he could. This gave me an idea of how high to hang them.
I hung them all just a bit higher than he could reach. However, after doing the activities, I could keep them just as high as he could reach instead of any higher.
Then George came and spotted a shape and tried to grab it. Jumping to get it.
Sometimes it took many jumps. And even a little help from me stretching the yarn down further.
Once he grabbed one, he’d look to spot the other two to make a set. And would jump and grab those shapes.
And repeat until they all were done!
You can make the shapes as simple or complex as your child knows. We did circles, squares, rectangles, diamonds, ovals and triangles.
