Make your very own homemade heart shaped bird feeder to feed the birds this February for Valentine’s Day and National Bird Feeding Month!
I’ve been seeing these a lot around blogs lately so I wasn’t sure if I wanted to post another one.
But this is probably the one Valentine activity that Henry was so excited to do.
And he could do about 90% of it all by himself.
All you need to make your own bird feeder is:
- piece of toasted bread
- heart shaped cookie cutter
- peanut butter
- bird seed
To make the heart shaped bird feeder, you just cut a heart out of the piece of toast using the cookie cutter.
Spread peanut butter over both sides of the toast (the one thing I had to do, but in another year, I’m sure he’ll be able to do that himself too).
Press the buttered toast into a bowl filled with bird seed.
Press it good. Over and over. Get all the little nooks and crannies of that piece of toast filled with yummy bird seed for those birds!
Suggestion for a better bird feeder:
Punch a hole in the corner and thread a string of twine through before it completely dries.
Then let the completed bird feeder dry overnight or in a low heat oven. Hang it up in a place you can watch the birds peck away at it.
I, unfortunately, did not punch a hole in it before it dried, and the heart broke into pieces.
I glued it back together with peanut butter. Its now propped on our porch railing, instead of hanging, that we can see from our front window.
Yes, painting the porch is on my to do list for this summer.
My intention was to do a few more and hang them up in a cluster.
We just haven’t had the time…

I will save this idea for my grandchildren….but I’ll have to make quite a few. We have so many beautiful birds but also squirrels, chipmunks and deer. They all love to eat from the feeder. Thanks for a nice and simple idea.

I think this would be something great for a Pre-K or Kindergarten class to do!
P.S.
I actually love when paint on porch rails, steps, etc. is cracked and peeling! Adds beautiful character :)

This is pretty neat and I think my son will like this. Does the piece eventually break up and get messy? We don’t have a backyard so clean-up is an issue.

Nina – It never did for us… but it probably just depends on the bread/toast and how stable it is. And whether or not the birds actually eat it.
