This is a SUPER simple idea, but one that has helped my son’s reading tremendously!
My son is starting to read full sentences, and I obviously want him to practice when he can, but when we’re reading books together, he still prefers that I read them aloud to him.
I’ve been finding that he will opt for reading on his own only when it doesn’t feel like a chore. So lately, the “Sentence Fairy” has been sneaking into our home, and leaving little notes and questions on my son’s playroom easel.
Often when we come downstairs for breakfast or when we’re returning home after a day out, we’ll notice that the Sentence Fairy has scribbled something new on the easel. My son is getting a huge kick out of this, and not knowing when a new note is coming keeps him on his toes.
And the best part is that my son is being “tricked” into reading the whole sentence on his own without my encouragement. We’ve started writing back to the Sentence Fairy, which is now nurturing more literacy skills.
It’s such a simple, easy “trick,” but it’s been a big hit in this house!
