Tackle Diaper Rash: Bathtime Activities

This post is sponsored by Boudreaux’s Butt Paste®, the effective diaper rash cream that treats and prevents diaper rash with every change. Let’s kick some rash!

Boudreaux's Butt Paste

I’ve been using Boudreaux’s Butt Paste® for four years now [maybe not for me personally...]. Even with a toddler, its still handy to have around and with another baby on the way, we’ll be using it for awhile yet.

I remember getting my first tube of it at my baby shower from a friend that gave me a gift of ‘baby necessities’. I laughed at the sight of butt paste. But she assured me it’s the best. And I found out that it is. One application of Butt Paste and every diaper rash, redness or sore bottom that the boys have ever had, and its gone!

Of course, we try to prevent diaper rashes as much as possible. We cut back on juices and excessive amounts of fruit when we have any issues. Of course, changing their diaper more frequently helps as well.

We’ve also learnt that baths are soothing to those bottoms, most of the time! [We've had one or two where its not, so I suppose it depends!]

So on a day when there’s a diaper rash, a long bath is in order for the kids.

To keep the kids happy and having a fun time when there’s a diaper rash around, a few fun activities in the bathtub for the babies and toddlers couldn’t hurt! Followed up with an application of Boudreaux’s Butt Paste and a sore bottom is taken care of!

Color Themed Sensory Bath

[above: Color Theme Sensory Bath from Growing a Jeweled Rose]

Here are some bathtime activity ideas:

  • Take regular [non-bath, but non-electronic] toys in the tub for the kids to clean and wash! A car wash is a huge hit around here!
  • Paint in the tub! The Imagination Tree shares a shaving cream paint that is colorful and super easy to make.
  • Take spoons, measuring cups and small tubs for water transfer in the bathtub!
  • For toddlers that can blow, have them blow bubbles in the tub! Creative with Kids uses dish soap and straws!
  • Color the water for added interest. Or have a full-on color themed bath like Growing a Jeweled Rose provides!
  • Play with foam sheets. Cut them up into shapes and let your child place them on the wall or side of the tub.
  • On these hot days, add colored ice cubes to change the color of the water! Babies especially love ice!

Creative with Kids also has a great list of bath time activities for those that fear bath time, but they’d be perfect for a diaper rash scenario too to spice up the bath a little.

  1. Tabatha Wade says:

I am a first time mom and ai remember getting Butt Paste at my baby shower and thinking how funny the name was and wondering if it would really work. Then I started to notice that in every little goody bag someone gave me there was a sample of it. Butt Paste is truely amazing as the few times ai have had to use it on my little one it has seemed to make the diaper rash disappear overnight! My baby lives bath time so ai have also done a lot of experimenting using bath time as a soothing and use of natural remedies to help ease the irritating diaper rash. I have found that if I stick 2 teabags of Chamomile Tea into the bath tub it relieves the burn and irritation of the rash and provides a soothing and relaxing environment. I have also at night stuck a tea bag inside my little ones diaper to help keep the acids away from the skin. As a plus they give baby a nice smell and their personal aroma therapy!

  2. We’ve had that diaper rash that’s sore in the tub too. Some of the best cure is to let the area dry, so we’ve done some tub activities in the tub w/out the water (like bathtub crayons). Then applying cream AFTER it’s had a chance to dry out a bit. That’s really helped.

    http://craftingplay.blogspot.com/2012/01/bathtub-canvas.html

  3. We actually never had a diaper rash issue. The only time we had a bottom rash was at the beginning of potty training go figure and I used a different brand rash cream (sorry). Thanks for the giveaway and post .

  4. My babies are far from diaper rashes (but you are right we keep Butt Paste on hand, as every once in a while even those older kid bottoms need a little soothing.)

When Little M was a baby she had a very sensitive bottom, even the wipes make for sensitive kids upset her. I started rinsing out a handful of wipes at a time and keeping them damp in a plastic bag. That way I was still able to wipe her with the strength of a wipe, but water was the only thing in them.

  5. Kayla Effing says:

At first I used Boudreaux Butt Paste on my Ava, but she has bad eczema so I had to get a special cream from the Dr. But I have heard from several friends and family members that plain vaseline works wonders.

  6. Butt paste is our brand of choice for diaper rash. Whenever my little ones have had a rash, one application takes care of it, just as you said. Other then that, we use soothing baths to help those bottoms feel better.

  7. I use coconut oil or Butt Paste. Both work well for my babies. Since I’m nursing, I’ve even tried breastmilk, as that’s supposed to be good for a lot of things.

  8. Angela Cormier says:

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste was the only thing I used for both of my boys. It always worked very quickly on even the worst diaper rashes. I put it on every night after their baths to protect their skin.

  9. I use the natural version of the Butt Paste, love it! I try to let my son run around naked a lil bit to to let the area dry and get some air but that’s backfired on me a few times now! :-) . Baths always help though. I’ve heard bling soda sprinkled in the bath helps too.

  10. I’m a mother of 4 with #5 on his way this winter. It’s funny how some of my babies almost never had diaper rashes and others had it constantly. im like you, I always start with a good bath to get everything clean, and then the one thing that I quickly learned was to only buy wipes that stated plainly “no alcohol”. Since you never know when a rash will occur, it was helpful to me to always be prepared with wipes that didn’t make it burn! Lastly, it’s frustrating to spend so much on rash cream after rash cream, just to find out they don’t seem to help, or worse, they sting and make my baby cry even more! What a gem to find one that heals quickly and soothes. Can’t wait to try Boudreaux’s with number 5!

  11. Jessica says:

We didn’t have a diaper rash issue… on the baby. I had a postpartum rash that was just awful though. I spent a lot of effort trying to keep things dry and then put vaseline on when I was sure there weren’t any damp spots. I’m reading through all the comments though because I have one on the way and don’t expect to get lucky twice.

  12. I soothe diaper rash with a little chamomile and and oatmeal soak. Then we let air dry for about an hour or two. If it doesn’t start to diminish in a day we change from disposable diapers to cloth diapers.

  13. Butt Paste is the only diaper rash cream we use too. My daughter has milk allergy, and in the early months after she was born before we eliminated dairy (not knowing she had an allergy), it would make for some horrible rashes. I’ve found that allowing them to “air out” is very helpful, and fragrance free baby wipes or ever a warm washcloth used in place of a wipe is helpful. To me, even the fragrance free wipes have additives that could bother the skin.

  14. We love Butt Paste too! We recently started experimenting with the natural formula…

  15. Mami2jcn says:

I like Boudreaux on Facebook with my username Mary Happymommy.

Use unscented wipes and expose baby’s bottom to the air by allowing them time to play without their diaper on.

  16. i’m due in november, so nothing yet, but i’ve heard great things about BBP and natural coconut oil! thanks for the chance!

  17. I always used unscented wipes to clean, and then vaseline or cream to prevent rash.

  18. I have used Butt Paste with all three of my children and I will with our new baby as well.

  19. Lori Summers says:

I use Boudreaux’ Butt Paste!! It is a godsend!! My sister used it with her twins and when my daughter was born, there was a couple of tubes in the huge gift basket she gave me. I love it!! It usually clears her up in just one use, but sometimes I need to use it more. I swear by it and now it is included with every gift I get for new moms.

  20. Alicia K says:

i have found butt paste to be the best solution to soothe diaper rash

  21. I use butt paste, it works great. We’ve had lots of diaper rash issues, and always looking for a great product to help!

  22. I actually like Aveeno more than the butt paste. We tried it and it doesn’t seem to “stick” as well to my daughter’s bottom when it’s raw. Aveeno also clears it up in one application. Thanks for the post though! I will have to try bath time as a cure for diaper rash. My daughter went through a period where she had them off and on for about 3 weeks!

  23. I use whatever the closest Zinc oxide cream tube I have, plus some clotrimazole if it’s really bad (I buy the vaginal one rather than the athlete’s foot one, on the supposition that the one that goes in your hoo-haw is gentler on the skin!) Lansinoh wipes have been a GODSEND for wiping those red little bottoms! She’d be SCREAMING in pain as any other wipe started feeling like sandpaper on her irritated skin.

  24. I used butt paste for diaper rash.

  25. I’ve used Butt Paste & it works great. But I do try to change diapers often to avoid diaper rash.

  26. Terry C says:

I’ve found that Boudreaux’s Butt Paste has worked better than anything else I have tried

  27. My son hasn’t arrived yet (November 21st) so I don’t have an answer to how to soothe a diaper rash but I’m sure winning this will help! :)

  28. I have always used Boudreaux’s Butt Paste it has worked the best on my babies

  29. Jenny Stanek says:

Actually, we have ALWAYS used this butt paste with our kids, it’s what was even recommended by the doctors and nurses!

  30. Kristin says:

We live in South Africa, so Boudreaux’s is not available here. After seeing all these comments, I’m thinking I might have to have my sister send some over in my next package. We use Sudocrem – it’s originally from the UK. Works well on diaper rash as well as other cuts and abrasions as it has antibiotic principles.

  31. cornstarch works well and air

  32. butt paste works great!

  33. I need to try this product, we’ve used a Aloe Vera home recipe and it works, but the reviews of this are great! need to try it :)

  34. My mom taught me to make a corn starch paste-she swore by it-I tried it and it worked awesome-and now my daughter uses it on her children. Thanks for the great giveaway. Good luck too everyone who entered.

  35. June Ebinger says:

BOUDREAUX WORKS WONDERS. I WOULDN’T USE ANYTHING ELSE. IT’S THAT GOOD!

  36. Robin Blankenship says:

    Boudreaux’s Butt Paste

  37. I have found the best method when possible is to just let them run bottomless for a while. Next keep them cool and then I used Bag Balm (is what we call it). I had not heard of Boudreaux’s Butt Paste

  38. Michele Henneman says:

I’ve always been a fan of Desitin, the thick kind, not the new cream.

  39. Lisa Brooks says:

A&D forever ago when my kids were little, but as they grew, they didnt like to keep diapers on, so My next answer would be, letting the skin breathe. LOL

  40. I love Boudreaux’s, but I also be sure to let my baby go without a diaper for a bit after bathtime and let them dry out well before I put it on them.

  41. Diane Bode says:

We always used Desitin. But this sounds wonderful!

  42. Lee Black says:

We’ve always used Desitin, but I would definitely give Boudreaux’s Butt Paste a try!

  43. patricia says:

    I used a &d

  44. We try to prevent it, but on the rare occasion that it happens, we use a diaper cream.

  45. Letting the baby crawl around naked works good, but when that’s not practical, I *LOVE* Earth Mama Angel Baby’s Angel Baby Bottom Balm. Not only does it work really well, it’s completely natural & toxin-free.

  46. Debra Gaswint says:

My babies are all grown up but I am going to recommend this to my 3 nieces who have all had babies this year. I didn’t have this around when my kids were little, we just used A and D ointment, and it worked OK.

  47. My first is due in a few weeks, so I don’t have any mom experience yet. While I’d love to skip the diaper rash stage completely (cue laughter from all the moms!) I’m sure I’ll be giving this stuff a try.

  48. D Schmidt says:

We bathe our son in an oatmeal bath then use Boudreaux’s butt paste

  49. Danielle B says:

    I’ve only tried Desitin

  50. Stephanie H says:

I use a mixture of Shortening and lavender essential oil with Corn Starch and zinc

  51. Christy Maurer says:

I always used the tried and true Desitin! That’s what my mom used and that’s what I used. It always was almost completely healed the next day!

  52. I’ve discovered for my kids it’s usually inferior diapers, and as long as I change them regularly and use a good brand for them diaper rash is not a problem.

  53. Danielle Davis/Grady says:

My kids rarely get a diaper rash but when they do i use butt paste & sometimes i will leave the diaper off for a while to let them air out a bit! :)
    Thank you!

  54. I learned from trial and error to use a good quality cream like Butt Paste or Triple Paste on diaper rash. It’s well worth the money.

  55. a marie hj saver says:

I’ve tried making a little paste with water and baking soda, it seems to help a bit.

  56. Trisha B says:

I mix ¼ cup of cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of water and it works.

  57. Good quality cream and regular changing

  58. Kimberly says:

Thankfully neither of my kids suffered from diaper rash very often, but I always used Desitin when they did and it always worked.

  59. colleen boudreau says:

    I use baby powder.

  60. Eucerin cream

  61. vanessa i says:

I use aquaphor on my baby’s redness and a few hours later…like magic, it’s gone!

  62. Sarah H. says:

I gently wash the area and let it air dry for awhile. Desitin is also very good.

  63. Laurel Simmons says:

Desitin (although I did also use Boudreaux :)

  64. Change the diaper regularly and use desitin and baby powder.

  65. chantal says:

Air dry! i let my daughter run around (our home) naked for a little while then cover her in max strength desitin and put a diaper back on. she loves the freedom!

  66. Desitin

  67. tried desitin before but i’ve heard great things about buttpaste! thanks!

  68. Buttpaste is great, when I don’t have any of that baking soda is a good option as well.

  69. Jeanne B says:

Zinc oxide always worked when my babies had a diaper rash.

  70. deanna ashworth says:

    I always used a&d ointment

  71. Kristy S. says:

I give my son lots of naked time to soothe his diaper rash. Outside is best, but we do inside in a pinch (much more dangerous). It really helps and he loves it!

  72. Jamie Brigham says:

I cure diaper rash by using Johnson and Johnson baby powder as well as Desitin maximum strength. I’ve never had a problem ,it works perfectly~

  73. I always use A&D Ointment.

  74. Donna L says:

When my daughter was a baby I used baby powder or desitin cream.

  75. Sheila K. says:

    Desitin always seemed to help!

  76. First, to prevent a diaper rash, change the baby’s diapers often! But if a mother or father finds that their baby has diaper rash the need to use good barrier ointment — one that forms a protective layer on the skin — after every diaper change can help protect your baby’s irritated skin from stool and urine. The BEST product to use that I have found to clear up a baby’s diaper rash is of course Boudreaux’s Butt Paste! It really, really works!

  77. brenda a says:

As soon as I notice redness I rub some diaper rash cream right away.

  78. kathy f says:

We use plain cornstarch and butt paste.

  79. Diane L. says:

Desitin is the best product I’ve tried. It also works well to soothe my skin when I have a cold with a runny nose!

  80. jane bade says:

I always corn starch and a little baby oil to make a paste. worked well for my son who is now 25 years old. I was living in France and some how I came up with that idea as I didn’t see anything for diaper rash there.

  81. Cynthia Teer says:

    Butt Paste of course.

  82. I soothe diaper rashes by applying diaper rash cream liberally after letting the baby soak in warm water. The bath seems to help the rash. Then I dry the baby off thoroughly and apply the cream all over. Then I put baby powder on top of the cream and do my best to change the baby as often as possible. The best advice is an ouce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

  83. Natasha Harris says:

Lots of air on the bum, and a barrier of butt paste when a diaper is needed. Change diapers often, and a rinse in the tub instead of a wipe across a sore bottom.

  84. Diaper rashes aren’t common in my house. I believe in prevention! Quickly change those little buns! But, alas, occasionally it occurs. Butt Paste is the way to go. All better!

  85. I’m a new-mom-to-be (due 08/20/12!) so I don’t have any current methods for dealing with diaper rash. However, I have loved reading all these comments to get ideas and prepare myself for the rashes in my future!!

  88. Shelley C. says:

    desitin. Thanks

  89. I use diaper cream at the first sign of irritation

  91. Thick layer desitin if it starts, otherwise dry with powders

  92. Samantha R. says:

    Fresh air!

    • Veronica R says:

Diaper rash cream in a thick layer. Make sure skin is completely dry before applying.

  94. I used baby powder and baby wipes

  95. Some cream and diaper free time

  96. michelle colon says:

i put some creme on it first sign of a rash and then i let her air out! she goes with out a diaper for a few hours and it makes her feel better! Sometimes she has an accident! But thats what mommys are here for!Q

  97. We use the Boudreaux’s all-natural butt paste and as much diaper free time as we can!

  98. Laura Jacobson says:

We always give him a bath and let him soak in the tub. I have never tried this , but am going to go and look for it at the store!

  107. I used A&D on my kids when they had rashes, but my kids are in their late teens. Not even sure if this product was around when they were little.

  110. JaKell M says:

cool bath with fragrance free mild baby soap, then let them air dry naked for a bit, lather wth cream and change often :)

cool bath with fragrance free mild baby soap, then let them air dry naked for a bit, lather with cream and change often :)

  112. Liberty Boblett says:

When my kids were babies, if they had diaper rash, I would put them in the bathtub and let them soak in some lukewarm water. Then afterwards, I would just let their baby booty’s air dry and leave the diaper off for as long as possible. When it was bedtime or such, I would put on some Desitin. I think the air helped more than anything!!!

  113. Jennica P. says:

When my daughters got a diaper rash I’d give them a warm bath, let it air dry, then put on the aveeno diaper rash cream.

  114. I bathe my child with Aveeno sensitive baby wash and then I apply Desitin Paste to my child’s little tooshy, making sure to gently massage the paste on. I also use ice pack buddies pressed gently against my babys skin to soothe the rash.

    sreis1987@gmail.com

  115. Anne Lehnick says:

I soothe a diaper rash by getting my daughter’s bottom clean (gently!) then patting it dry. We let it air out as much as possible before putting on a diaper. But when it’s time for a diaper, we use a moisture barrier cream to protect her rash from what she might do in that diaper. When she has a really bad rash, she seems to like to sit in a warm bath for a bit.
