Get extra with your next art project for kids with fancy oil pastel resist watercolors on canvas!
There’s something so fancy about art on a piece of canvas.
I think it really makes the kids think they’re making something extra special. Last year the boy made a piece of art on canvas with the frozen paints outside on a very hot day, which hangs in George’s room.
Since I bought a twin-pack of canvases (affiliate link) last year, I still had one left to use. I was just waiting for a special day.
Extra Fancy Oil Pastel Resist Watercolors on Canvas for Kids
This year, I decided to stay indoors on a very hot day instead and break out the oil pastels that CraftProjectIdeas sent us!
To make your own oil pastel watercolor resist on canvas, you’ll need:
- watercolor paints
- oil pastel crayons
- art canvas
- paint brushes
- cup of water
I set the boys up at the table, side by side, with the blank canvas and the oil pastels.
George got right into it. Scribbling all over.
Henry was a little more hesitant and tried his best to draw something. He made lots of parallel lines.
He told me they were the field rows. Of course, farming is always on this kid’s mind.
Create Oil Pastel Resist Watercolors Art Together
Once Henry announced that he was finished and George finally seemed bored of it. I brought out paintbrushes and watercolors.
And when I say watercolors, I mean stuff I made. Water and food coloring.
Make your own DIY edible paint with this simple recipe!
I gave Henry his choice of colors. Green and blue it was.
Then I just let them go at it. It was so nice to see them painting together.
The oil pastels resisting the watercolors as they painted. The paint soaked into the bare spots on the canvas but just beaded up over the places the boys had colored.

Now that the canvas has dried and the colors set, the oil pastels have a pretty shiny quality to them.
Roll With The Painting Process
Because this is art with kids, things might get messy. George had a little mishap, dumping the entire container of green paint water onto the canvas!
But that’s okay. He quickly grabbed a paper towel – all on his own – and tried to wipe it up as best he could.
And this is one that will hang in Henry’s room. He just has to decide where he wants it.
We’ll definitely be creating more of these canvas pieces of art in the years to come. I’m going to hang the “old” ones in the hallway as a hall of fame of the boys’ canvas art.
I think this is going to be an annual tradition on a hot day. It’s just so special make art on canvas for the boys to hang in their room.
I love that they made this piece of art completely together. A collaborative piece of art that I’ll love every time I see it.
Have you made a “real piece of art” on canvas with your kids? We’d love to check out your creations!

Me and Lilith have made a couple, but will definitely make more :) Love the effect. I’m going to try it on one of my own paintings as well.
